Cobblestone Golf Course - Kendallville, Indiana - A daily fee course built in conjunction with a single family housing development. Construction was completed in October 1997, and the course opened in May 1998. Cobblestone should have no trouble competing with any course in the Fort Wayne area. Despite a relatively modest construction cost under $2.5 million, Golf Digest ranked Cobblestone the 8th Best New Affordable Public Course in their 1999 survey. The category includes all public courses, opened between April 1998 and March 1999, that cost less than $50 to play. The 2002-2003 edition of Golf Digest's Places to Play awarded Cobblestone a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars, placing it among North America's 330 best public-access courses. Only 12 courses, including legendary courses such as Pebble Beach and Pinehurst #2, achieved all 5 stars. The course features top quality construction, including USGA greens, substantial irrigation and drainage, and continuous concrete cart paths. The site has substantial elevation changes, several existing wetlands, and an existing drainage ditch that flows through five of the holes. The drainage ditch was made to look like a natural stream, and features several small waterfalls and rapids. Wells keep the stream flowing and the three new lakes full, and also provide supplemental irrigation water. The signature hole is most likely the 12th, which is located in view of the main entrance to the development. It is a par 3, ranging from 104 to 203 yards, which plays downhill to an amphitheater green protected to the left and rear by sand and grass bunkers cut into the hillside, and guarded on the front left by a lake and more sand. A large sycamore tree comes into play to the right of the fairway. The course already plays host to an NGA Hooters Professional Golf Tour event, and a Northeastern Indiana Amateur Tour event. Several Hooters contestants said the course is the best they've played on the tour.
