Hawks Nest Golf Club - Wooster, Ohio - An upscale daily-fee course, which opened nine holes in July of 1993, and the second nine in May of 1994. Despite very little advertising, it is already the most popular course in the area and is attracting play from throughout Ohio. The January '96 Golf Digest ranked Hawks Nest among the top 5 public-access courses in Ohio. The 2000-2001 edition of Golf Digest's Places to Play awarded Hawks Nest a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars, placing it among North America's 201 best public-access courses. Only 16 courses, including legendary courses such as Pebble Beach and Pinehurst #2, achieved all 5 stars. Hawks Nest has continued to earn 4.5 stars through the 2006-2007 edition. The North Central Business Journal selected the course as the fourth best in the region, the only public course on their list. Ohio Magazine rates the course among the 10 best public courses in the state. The course has been filled almost to capacity, as evidenced by the more than 43,000 rounds played in 1994, despite the short six month season, including 8062 rounds played in July alone. Prior to opening for the 1995 season, they already had all their weekend morning tee times booked through October. One member of Glenmoor, a private Nicklaus course about forty miles from Hawks Nest, which is ranked 15th in the state, told the staff at Hawks Nest that they have the best course in the area, and has played Hawks Nest on a weekly basis. He even got permission to land his helicopter in their parking lot, and flies a foursome over from Glenmoor about once a month. One golfer, unaware of our previous experience, told the pro, "It looks like a Fazio course." Hawks Nest has also been praised for its excellent playability and superior drainage. Despite the top quality construction, Hawks Nest was built for roughly $2.9 million.
