Laura Walker Golf Course (now The Lakes at Laura S. Walker) - Laura S. Walker State Park, Waycross, Georgia - A state park golf course, opened in March of 1996. The course, despite the relatively modest construction cost of just under $2.5 million, features top quality construction throughout. The course has USGA greens, a variety of grasses, substantial irrigation and drainage systems, and continuous concrete cart paths. The course is playable almost immediately after heavy rains which shut down other area courses. In fact, the course received 3" of rain, which ended just prior to the grand opening, but opened on schedule with good playing conditions. Our design transformed a relatively flat, plain site into a wide variety of spectacular golf holes, featuring several lakes, large waste areas, both sand and grass bunkers, and substantial contouring. The course ratings person from the Georgia Golf Association said the Laura Walker course is one of the nicest courses in Georgia, and he would like to play the Georgia Amateur tournament there. In fact, the course has hosted numerous important professional and amateur events, including: The DP Stewart & Stewart Tour Sponsored by Golfweek, The Southeast Georgia Senior Tour, The United American Senior Tour, The Georgia PGA Section Junior Tour, The Georgia PGA Section Senior Tour, The PGA Playing Ability Test, The Georgia State Senior Womens Golf Association Championship, The Georgia State Senior Four Ball Championship, and The Georgia State Girls High School Championship. The local private club lost over 100 members, who play the Laura Walker course instead.
