Legion Memorial Golf Course - Everett, Washington - An 18 hole major remodeling project. The cost for the project was roughly $5 million, including more than $1.3 million for drainage alone. In the past, the golf course, which averages over 70,000 rounds a year, was plagued by extremely muddy conditions much of the time. After remodeling, the course is one of the driest in the Puget Sound area, with seventy acres of the course capped by a 6" sand layer over drainage lines installed on fifty foot centers. Those familiar with the old layout will have a hard time recognizing the new course. The old course dated back to the 1930's, and had very basic greens, only a couple of sand traps, and no water, except for a few drainage ditches. The remodeling work included the re-routing of several holes, all new greens, more than double the existing tee space, and the addition of four new lakes, a waterfall and recirculating stream, and more than fifty sand traps. In addition to the golf course improvements, the parking lot was expanded, and two on-course restrooms were built. The most dramatic new holes might be numbers 15 and 16, which wrap around two of the new lakes and the waterfall. Number 15 is a 547 yard par five which plays roughly 35 feet downhill for the first 300 yards, then 10 feet back uphill to the green, which is guarded on both sides by sand, and on the right by one of the lakes and the waterfall. Number 16 is a 158 yard par 3 which plays 35 feet downhill to a green guarded on the right by sand and water. The recirculating stream flows down the hillside, between number 16 tees, toward number 15 green, then into the upper lake between the two holes. Number 18, a 528 yard par 5, provides a great finish to the round, as the golfer hits to an amphitheater green set against the backdrop of Mt. Pilchuck and Three Fingers. Legion re-opened September 1, 1998. The construction work was carried out by Daylen, Inc. of Fresno, CA, a Certified Builder/Member of the Golf Course Builders Association of America. Because of the substantial improvement of the layout and conditions, Legion's rating improved from 2 stars to 4 stars, on a scale of 5, in the 2000-2001 edition of Golf Digest's Places to Play. The May 2000 Golf Digest listed the course among the four most improved in their rating.
